Frequently Asked Questions

About the project

Who’s behind this?

SilverBullet+ is built by Zef Hemel, the primary author of the main SilverBullet.md open source project. SilverBullet+ is a natural extension of that project, bringing the power of SilverBullet to a native desktop app. See principles.

Is SilverBullet+ open source?

The desktop app itself is not open source, but it’s built on top of SilverBullet.md, which is fully open source and always will be. The core editing experience, plugins, and Lua scripting are all part of the open-source project.

The reason for this approach is sustainability. Building, supporting and maintaining SilverBullet takes significant time, which has been purely voluntary effort. However, as the userbase and feature set has grown significantly over the years, more attention is required. To ensure sustained development, this hybrid solution was invented.

What about a mobile app?

This will come at some point. Stay tuned.

Buying

Is SilverBullet+ free?

For personal use and use in education, yes — the core editing experience is identical in both tiers. A paid Pro license is required for use at work, and unlocks some (minor) additional power user features. See the Buy page for a full comparison.

What is a ‘seat’?

You can think of a ‘seat’ as a single user. When you buy a Pro license, it is valid for a single user. You can use it on multiple devices if you like, there are no technical restrictions on this.

The use case to buy multiple seats is to be able to distribute to your team, which simplifies buying. If you buy 10 seats, you will receive 10 license keys you can give to 10 users. Those license keys can be individually revoked (e.g. if people leave your team), and you can then reissue new ones in their place for new joiners.

Can I receive an invoice for my purchase?

Definitely! After you make your purchase, on your Account page, next to the Subscriptions header click the “Manage” button, from here, on the left select “Payments”, click the payment you need the invoice for. Then you can first update data you’d like to appear on your invoice (such as company name, tax ID etc.), and then an invoice can be issued via the “View Invoice” button.
